Montessori College Oost in Amsterdam

Students from 56 different nationalities, with little knowledge of the Dutch language, are enrolled at the Montessori College Oost in Amsterdam. This school, designed by the famous architect, Herman Hertzberger, was designed to bring the urban space to mind: a place of crossing, meeting and assembly.

The school’s layout, with 1200 to 1600 students, is inspired by the paradigm: mixing the classroom space as far as possible with the “urban” approach of shared spaces. The result is a large square or piazza, with classrooms and several laboratories, that breaks out from the compartmentalisation of spaces.
